Shadows By: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Shadows (A Lux Novella)
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Pages: 180
Rating: 4/5

The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are...well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.

Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.
Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in.
Captivated. Lured. Loved.
Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

   Shadows is a Lux novella by (one of my new favourite authors) Jennifer L. Armentrout! Shadows is a prequel to Obsidian, meaning the book takes place before the events that occur in Obsidian. For those of you who actually read the synopsis above, you can tell that this book focuses on Daemon's twin brother, Dawson.

   Shadows essentially takes us through Dawson and Bethany falling love, and the obstacles that come along with it. At first I was kind of reluctant to read Shadows because, having read Obsidian, I knew very well how Dawson and Bethany's story ended. (No happily-ever-after here folks). But I'm really glad I decided to give this book a shot. Not only do we get to read about a sweet romance, but we also get the chance to gain some history from our beloved Obsidian aliens.

   Shadows is narrated from three different POVs- Dawson, Bethany, and Daemon's. Having the chance to read through Dawson and Bethany both, made it really easy to see how they felt for each other. But, the best parts for me, were when we read through Daemon's point of view. Seeing how Daemon had to watch his brother, essentially, put his life on the line for a human really explains Daemon's attitude towards Katy in Obsidian.

   The whole "love" component to Shadows was good too. Although I find Daemon and Katy's "relationship" a lot steamier- Dawson and Bethany's was true and pure. My only complaint would have to be that, because Shadows is a novella, I felt that the plot went along at a fast pace due to the shortness of the book. That being said, I'm also kind of glad that I wasn't able to get to attached to the characters (because if I did, it would have made reaching the end that much harder!)

The Cover...

   Ahhhh the beauty of twins. Because Daemon and Dawson share the same hotness bonds, we all get the pleasure of seeing the wonderful model from Obsidian on the cover for Shadows. *cheers loudly* The covers for the Lux novels are so friggen gorgeous- can't stop looking at them!

Favourite Quotes...

Dee’s hand fluttered around her as she spoke. “I was outside, and it looked as if a light show was going on in your bedroom. Daemon said you were probably mas—”
And Dee also knew no boundaries.
“Ah, no, please don’t finish that sentence.” He lowered his hands, eyes narrowing at his sister. “Don’t ever finish that sentence.”

~~~~~
Then Ash twisted toward Daemon, her cheeks flushed. "I can't believe you're allowing him to do this. Next thing we know, you'll be dating a human."
Daemon busted out laughing. "Yeah, not going to happen."
~~~~~

"I want to kiss you." There was a pause, and her heart soared, chest swelled. "Is that all right with you?" her asked.

Overall...

   Overall, whether you've read Obsidian, or are looking to start reading the Lux series, you should definitely read this novella. Shadows allows us Lux fans to have a better understanding on the things that occur in Obsidian. And if you've read Obsidian and are desperately awaiting the arrival of Onyx (book two) on August 14, 2012, then Shadows is the perfect cure!
