This is the story of Teague and Cailin, two teenagers who have been brought together by fate. Teague, a human, struggles to come to terms with the consequences of a recent accident that has destroyed the happy life that he had once enjoyed. Cailin, a pixi, is trying to stay true to herself while fighting against forces beyond her control that have exiled her from her home into this strange world of humans. She fears the darkness. He cannot escape it. But when the two of them are thrown together, they begin to discover the light inside of themselves.

     Oath of Servitude is the first book in author C.E. Wilson's series, The Punishment Sequence. Oath of Servitude is about a pixi named Cailin, who is sent to live with a human  for a year as punishment for her un-pixi-like manner. Her dyed hair and use of make-up has alarmed The Elders and has lead them to sentencing Cailin to this year long punishment, rather than sending her to the Darkness for six months; a place where no pixi wishes to go. When Cailin arrives at the humans' house, she is faced with the difficult task of keeping her pixi-identity hidden from the blind boy named Teague, while struggling at the same time not to fall in love with him.

     I have to admit that Oath of Servitude is probably one of the most unique books I've read in a while. Although barely a foot tall, Cailin is spunky, vulnerable, and has an admirable love and loyalty towards her family. Seeing Cailin's reaction to entering a "giant's'" (AKA. Human's :P) home for the first time was really funny because she sees everything as ginormous. Her attempts at keeping her small size a secret from Teague was also an amusing thing to read about-- especially as the two of them grow closer and closer together. (FYI. Teague + Cailin = adorable !)

     Teague's character was a very interesting fella to read about. Having become recently blind after a terrible sports accident, Teague (like Cailin) is experiencing a new world himself-- one in permanent darkness. When your first introduced to his character, his anger is very evident. Luckily, as the novel goes on, Cailin's presence in Teague's life begins to change him and his once harsh view of life. I've never read in the POV of a blind character, and I have to say it was a cool experience. The way he describes what's going on around him is very detailed and puts an emphases on the senses.

     In addition to seeing Cailin and Teague's relationship grow, every few chapters we get plopped back into the pixi world. Here, we get to witness what Cailin's absence is doing to her family, as well as trying to piece together the mystery of Cailin's mother.

Favourite Quotes...

Humans were strange. Cailin watched the game of baseball for only a few minutes before realizing that the game was relatively simple to figure out.
Man throws ball.
Other man tries to hit ball.
If said ball is hit then man starts running in circle.
If man completes circle than humans cheer.
Big deal.

~~~~~
"A human life span is bit the blink of an eye for a true pixi. We open and close again before those around us, those we love, can ever really come to understand who we truly are."
~~~~~

"Dad's sleeping I think. Was the door acting funny or something?"
"How can door act funny?" she asked with a frown.

Overall...

     Overall, Oath of Servitude was an enjoyable unique and light read that any pixi fan will find entertaining. The ending left me with many questions that I hope will be answered in book two!
