Awaken is the third and final novel in the Abandon trilogy by Meg Cabot. I have been holding off on reading Pierce and John's final story for many reasons, however it was primarily because I just didn't want to see their story end. Not that I was all that worried, but Awaken proved to be an ending I believe Abandon fans will be more than content with!
I was really happy with Pierce's character in Awaken. Despite the fact that a certain event happens towards the beginning of the novel that you would expect to destroy her, Pierce handles the situation with strength and determination to fight. Not only that but Pierce finally accepts what her position in the Underworld means and understands there are sacrifices she'll have to make-- this acceptance makes Pierce look stronger and more bad-ass! I have been a fan of Pierce since book one, but this new toughness and confidence in herself, combined with her humour and vulnerability, made Pierce evolve into someone more than worthy of being by John's side in the Underworld.
Along with Pierce's growth came along growth in John and Pierce's relationship as well. As much as John is still very protective of Pierce, it does seem like the two of them are more like a team in Awaken. Both of them shine their brightest when they are together, and because of that, seeing them split apart at certain points of the novel make you anxious for their reunions. I also have to add how much I enjoyed getting glimpses of some romantic moments between these two lovebirds despite the troubles going on around them. I have always been a fan of their relationship and the dynamic in which it works. The ending of Awaken definitely made me wish I could read another novel about this couple that focuses on the future that was hinted at the end of Awaken.
Awaken moves at a fast pace that makes this final installment in the Abandon trilogy feel like a quick read. The plot is packed full of action and questions that keep you wondering what could possibly happen next. My only complaint in regards to the plot would be one particular scene in the first third of the novel that seemed very unrealistic. For those of you who've read the novel, you'll know what I mean by saying it involves two boats, the Underworld, and a calm, slow moving, plan talking, kissing filled John and Pierce during a situation you'd expect to see urgency from. Other than that scene, I found the rest of the plot both intriguing and entertaining due to the snippets of comedy sneaked in by both main and secondary characters!

Overall, Awaken ties up the Abandon trilogy beautifully and teases readers as to what direction our favourite characters will be going in the future. I'd love to one day hear that Meg Cabot is continuing Pierce and John's story however I'm happy with how things were left off. Have you read Awaken? Would you like to visit the Underworld?
